Prototype History – FS Class 940
The FS Class 940 was developed by the Italian State Railways as a powerful 0-10-0T tank locomotive, specifically designed for heavy shunting duties and steep industrial lines. Built primarily in the 1920s and 1930s, the Class 940 was engineered to deliver high tractive effort at low speeds, making it ideal for marshalling yards, dock areas, and industrial complexes throughout Italy.
Unlike tender locomotives, the Class 940 carried its coal and water on the locomotive itself, allowing for excellent weight distribution and strong adhesion. This made it exceptionally sure-footed and reliable, even under demanding conditions.
